Eating disorders are complex and exhausting mental health
conditions characterized by a range of body image, weight, and food issues.
There are three eating disorders recognized as mental health diagnoses.
They are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder.
-
Symptoms of Anorexia are the refusal to maintain
normal body weight for height and age, fear of weight gain and losing
control, a distorted body image, loss of menstrual cycle, restrictive
eating, with or without bingeing/purging, and extreme concern with body
weight and shape.
-
Symptoms of Bulimia are repeated episodes of bingeing
and purging, feeling out of control, frequent dieting, and extreme
concern with body weight and shape.
-
Symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder are episodes
of binge eating without purging, feeling out of control, and feelings of
guilt, disgust, or depression following a binge.

A person may develop an Eating Disorder for many of the
following reasons:
Psychological factors: low self-esteem, depression,
anxiety, loneliness
Interpersonal factors: family or personal relationships,
difficulty expressing oneself, history of abuse, history of being teased
Social factors: cultural messages, messages in the media
A person may exhibit the following behaviors in the early
stages of developing an eating disorder: an increase or decrease in weight,
changes in eating habits, dieting, eating strange foods, bingeing, or
ritualized eating behavior, preoccupation with weight and body image,
excessive exercise, vomiting, fasting, use of laxatives or diet pills,
isolation, depression, irritability, or marked changes in behavior.
If you suspect that someone you know is struggling with
their eating you should talk to them about it. Without being
confrontational or judgmental tell the person that you care about him or
her, and tell them why you are concerned. Listen without interruption, and
tell the person that you believe that they should talk to someone with
expertise. Help the person decide what to do next and let the person's
family or someone they trust, know about your concern.
If it is you that is struggling, seek professional help
through counseling. The Eating Disorders Resource Center is a great place
to start for assessment and treatment planning. Call 815-222-3859 or email

Back To Questions
A person can recover from an eating disorder. A
positive recovery is based on the person having positive support from
others, the person's understanding of one's hunger and fullness, the
person's level of maturity/self-esteem, and educational level, an early age
onset, shorter duration of the behavior, less denial about their disorder,
and no co-existing disorders or substance abuse issues.
Everyone can do a part in Eating Disorder prevention.
One should learn and education themselves and others about eating disorders,
promote "health at every size", role model to others a healthy relationship
with food and body image, avoid commenting on others shape or size, do not
overemphasize the importance of physical appearance, engage in self-care,
and call the Eating Disorders Resource Center with questions, treatment or
referral for treatment.
