Victim Offender Conferencing Answers

 

What is Victim Offender Conferencing?

  • Allows the victim to give input and play a role in developing a restitution plan for the offender.
  • An opportunity for the victim to tell the offender of the physical, emotional, and financial impact it has had on them in a safe environment.
  • A program that provides the victim and offender the opportunity to meet and engage in a discussion of the crime with the assistance of a trained facilitator.
  • A program that offers alternatives for youth to avoid a criminal record and still be held accountable for his/her wrong doings.

Who is eligible for Victim Offender Conferencing?

  • Crimes in which the victim is willing to participate.
  • Youth offender is in grades 7 through 12.
  • Youth attends one of the schools with in Ogle County.
  • Youth admits to involvement in incident.
  • Youth offender never having been on probation and has no cases pending.

What are the benefits of Victim Offender Conferencing?

  • Victim has lingering questions answered to help with the healing process.
  • Victim receives restitution and restores losses.
  • Offender takes responsibility and may begin to understand the impact of his/her behavior.

What we have learned from research?

  • Victims of crime who meet their offender are far more likely to be satisfied with the justice system response.
  • After meeting the offender, victims are significantly less fearful of being re-victimized.
  • Offenders who meet their victims are more likely to complete their restitution and be accountable for their behavior.
  • Considerably fewer and less serious crimes are committed by offenders who meet their victim/s.
