WhyTry Group Youth participating in a diversion program may be referred to a cognitive behavioral group. Group curriculum is based on the WhyTry Program, which utilizes visual analogies with solutions and questions to help youth gain insight into how to deal with daily challenges. The goal of the group is to help kids find the answer to the question “Why try in life?” when they are frustrated, confused, or angry with life’s pressures. The program stresses to the youth that although it may be difficult to make good decisions at times, doing so results in more opportunity, freedom, and self-respect. Youth are assessed by the facilitator to determine if they are appropriate for group participation. The group meets for an hour and a half, once a week, for eight weeks. Currently, youth are divided into two groups, junior high and high school. The group is also offered in two locations, Byron and Rochelle.
